The Evolution Of The Affiliate Marketing Funnel
Before I share the three forgotten funnels and how they work for offline businesses, I want to walk you through the four phases that most employees go through when they launch a home-based business WITHOUT using the "funnel building method".
As you read through this blog post, you'll probably identify phases you've been in, ones you're in now, phases you know people have been in, or ones they're in now.
It's interesting, because almost everyone who's asked me the question before, "Can I use funnels to build my home-based business?" is stuck in 1 of the 4 phases, yet those who use the three funnels online or offline, actually bypass all of them.
The goal ISN'T to get through the phases, it's to take a step outside of the phases, and build your home-based business on a completely different foundation...
Which I'll show you in the next blog post!
So sit back, relax, grab some popcorn, and let's go on this journey together.
Phase 1: The No Friends Left (NFL) Club
After launching your home-based business, the first thing you'll likely want to do is talk to your friends and family about whatever products and/or services you offer.
The problem is...
If your friends and family — the people you respect the most — don't support you, and if they talk negatively about what you're doing, then it can be quite devastating.
As a matter of fact, a huge percentage of employees actually give up on building their home-based business almost immediately after talking to friends and family.
Even if you make it past the first round of the people you respect the most in life, and they support you, when all is said and done, the exhaustion factor settles in.
You'll run out of friends and family who'll support your home-based business.
And if you adamantly try to talk to the same group of people over and over again, then they'll get tired of hearing from you and whatever it is you're saying to them, even if your intentions are good and your products and/or services can help them.
Over a period of time, they'll do whatever it takes to start avoiding you completely.
When this happens, you join a group I like to call the No Friends Left (NFL) Club.
Social media lets you expand your networking, but it's still a limited pool of people.
After continuously posting about your product and/or service on your social media, and asking your friends and followers to send you a message if they're interested, you'll quickly discover you're fishing in a pond that's not too interested in click bait.
And that's why growing through friends and family is so hard.
Instead of stepping OUTSIDE of their network to build their home-based business, a lot of employees just continue to beat down the same doors over and over again, as they watch their response rates get lower and lower each post and interaction.
And it's likely because they don't know what else to do.
Phase 2: The Anti-Sales Department
The second phase usually starts as soon as the first phase is ending.
With the few friends and family who support you, when they're ready to purchase, you'll send them to what I call the "anti-sales department", or your affiliate website.
Most affiliate marketing websites are well designed and have a professional display, they're beautiful, but they're not set up to get people to actually purchase anything.
They're bad at converting your website visitors into subscription-based customers.
Most skilled home-based business owners can sell any product and/or service...
But even if you can get your mom to fall in love with the product and/or service, and even if you set up the sale perfectly with no resistance or hesitation to buy, then you'd still have to send them to your affiliate marketing website to purchase and the checkout often confuses them with a horrible and outdated experience.
Most affiliate marketing websites can't keep the emotional connection you started. Imagine you're at a party, and there's a woman you REALLY want to ask out to eat. You go up to her, things go smoothly, and you're ready to take down her number, but right at that moment, you have to stop and say:
"Before I take down your number, I'm going to hand you off to my grandfather, who doesn't know how to use a phone, loves to tell a lot of unimportant stories, and has really bad breath. I promise you'll be fine! He'll get your information."
Even if she wanted to go out with you, at that point, she probably wouldn't because you handed her off to your grandfather, who we'll call the "anti-date department".
That's what it's like to send people interested in your products and/or services to your affiliate website that's oftentimes built by network attorneys, NOT marketers, so they do the OPPOSITE of what you want; repel people and push them away, instead of hooking them in.
Phase 3: The Clone Wars
The third phase sneaks up on you, usually about the time you're ready to go outside your network and look for new people to develop relationships with.
You're definitely in the No Friends Left (NFL) Club now, and you know that if you don't connect with new people outside of your current network, online or offline, then building your home-based business is going to lead straight to a dead end.
That's when you enter "The Clone Wars"‼️
In this phase, you're focused on learning and implementing marketing strategies to get visitors to your domain, making new connections, and developing relationships.
All of sudden, you have an epiphany.
Your affiliate website is the exact same website as other affiliates around the world.
They're creating MASSIVE competition for you.
Statistics show that 98% of businesses fail, and that's when they're selling unique products and/or services in a space WITHOUT thousands of identical competitors.
Imagine the statistics if everyone were selling the same thing in the same way.
When everyone is using the SAME affiliate website with no variation whatsoever, and everyone is posting the same social media content and saying the same thing, then what happens is people get used to the same stuff and start tuning it all out.
Instead of grabbing people's attention, it becomes an expected pattern to ignore.
In order for you to become successful at building a home-based business online, you need to always keep the concept of using a Pattern Interrupt in your mind.
This means doing things differently, keeping your social media audience excited, building and customizing your own funnels that interrupt their everyday patterns.
Phase 4: The Homeless Man With A Ferrari
Not everyone gets to the fourth phase.
As a matter of fact, most home-based business owners can't get out of the earlier phases to even experience what it's like to enjoy the essence of the fourth phase.
So I'll tell you what happens.
Phase 4 is when you make enough money selling products and/or services to think that your home-based business venture might actually be profitable in the long run,
but then out of nowhere, you're hit with the "homeless man with a Ferrari" problem.
Let me explain...
My friend Russell Brunson won a Ferrari by promoting products and/or services in one of his home-based business ventures after only 90 days of cracking the code!
Within one year, his commission checks had gone down to almost zero.
Can you believe it?
He became the homeless man who was making no money, but had a really nice car.
The truth is he wasn't homeless...
But if that had been his ONLY way of making money, then he surely would've been!
So I bet you're wondering how this happened to him?
He failed to understand one of the core foundations of building a business online, which is to have a reliable, efficient, and affordable system in place to consistently attract your ideal potential customers to your domains and funnels like clockwork.
He won an affiliate contest and a car, but failed to build a system and have a solid plan for long term growth and profitability in that particular home-based business.
He started studying the system concept, along with the "funnel building method", because he knew that these two parts were the key to building a business online.
Escape The Phases With Funnels
Going back to the roots of how to build a home-based business using the internet, there's a reason why some people are SO successful and bypass all these phases.
They aren't selling to friends and family every day.
They aren't spamming social media.
They don't use the anti-sales department or affiliate websites to close their sales.
They don't forget about having a reliable, efficient, and affordable system in place.
The people who have success building a home-based business using the internet, they use three core funnels, and that's what I'll talk about in the the next blog post.
